A favorite for Special Education Professionals.
You've met Dustin Hoffman's remarkable Rain Man character Raymond Babbit; now meet the real Rain Man.
Kim Peek, the one-of-a-kind megasavant who inspired the Academy Award-winning motion picture, is even more fascinating and gifted that his on-screen counterpart. Since the film's release, Kim has emerged from a world of comparative isolation to become a warm, outgoing, humorous and brilliant emissary for those with special needs. With his father, Kim travels the world to share his message to "recognize and respect differences in others."
"Kim, I may be the star, but you are the heavens." -Dustin Hoffman
"I don't think anybody could spend five minutes with Kim and not come away with a slightly altered view of themselves, the world, and our potential as human beings..."
-Barry Morrow, Rain Man screenwriter
Kim: And island of genius in the sea of the mentally handicapped -Joseph Walker, The Desert News
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 11, 1951, Kim's areas of recall include: history, music, literature, geography, sports and religion. At nine months of age, a doctor pronounced Kim "mentally retarded" and recommended that he be placed in an institution.
Kim has spoken to thousands of people throughout the world. He is extremely popular as a presenter to school and adult groups who deal with such topics as accepting individual differences and disabilities, understanding diversity, and tolerance, as well as character education.
A new video about Kim entitled Celebrating Diversity: A Universal Message From the Real Rain Man will be released in November, 2006.
