This year (2003), Dr. Thomas Lickona, is still one of the most recognized leaders in the character education movement. He presents an insightful and compelling argument for the role of schools in the development of student respect, responsibility, and moral education. In this video, Dr. Lickona provides a comprehensive model for values and character education our nation's schools. Specific classroom strategies, as well as school wide approaches are outlined in a clear and forceful fashion. Children and youth with disabilities are included in the school population shown. Included in this video:

  • Buck Lodge Middle School, Prince George's County Public Schools, MD
  • Fayetteville-Manlius School District, NY
  • The Character Education Partnership, Washington, DC

  • Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character, Boston University, MA

Never before in our nation's history has the need to develop character in children been greater. With the changing role of families, lack of religious affiliation among our youth as well as a decaying moral climate depicted in our media and entertainment industry, schools must play a major role in character and moral development.

The viewer will:

  • Be introduced to Dr.Thomas Lickona, one of the founders and foremost experts in the Character Education initiative
  • Understand the historical role of character development in education, and life in general
  • Learn what character education is and the role of the school as part of a collaborative effort to teach children a sense of right and wrong
  • Recognize that the qualities of character are the foundation of personal achievement as well as relationships, and are fundamental to everything we do
  • Learn about the comprehensive approach to character education, within a classroom and within a school
  • Be able to identify some of the common themes that make character education programs successful, such as effective leadership, a community-based identification of core virtues, a long range plan, integration of activities related to character development into the daily life of the school, and the involvement of parents and families
