When we began putting paraeducators in the classrooms years ago, we did so believing that these caring helpers would be an enormous support for classroom teachers...and in most cases they are. However, what we failed to take into account was that most teachers have had absolutely no training in supervising other adults. They also have not been trained in understanding what paras can legally and ethically be asked to do in the classroom. Furthermore, general classroom teachers are untimately responsible for all the students in the class and, therefore, have a large stake in the paras' performance, but are not armed sufficiently with the strategies to maximize the paras' effectiveness. That's why we have developed this very practical and easy-to-use guidebook.
