Tape 1: Where Do I Start?

The role of the paraprofessional in the inclusive setting is defined within this video series. It explains the paraprofessional’s role in making it possible for students with special needs to remain in the regular classroom as the paraprofessional supports and modifies their needs. This video also examines the critical areas of a typical school...the main office, the teachers’ lounge, the lunchroom, and regular/special education classrooms. Specific instruction is given to paraprofessionals on what to do, what to ask, and how to conduct themselves in these areas.

Tape 2: Working with Students in the Inclusive Classroom

This video provides paraprofessionals with insight and suggestions for the responsibility of monitoring student progress and providing optimal, appropriate support. The support may include monitoring behavior, modifying instruction and materials, safety issues, and technical or medical assistance. Areas of focus:

• importance and usefulness of program goals and directives
• assessing the special needs and abilities of students
• documenting and reporting on students’ progress
• when and how to modify class activities for students with special needs

Tape 3: Working with Other Adults in the Inclusive Classroom

This video provides insight for the paraprofessional about relating to the regular classroom teacher. In depth coverage surrounds issues related to:

• How to be a “teacher supporter,” utilizing various communication skills
• How to put communication skills into practice with various professionals and settings
• Techniques for managing instruction within the “teaching space
