Teachers know that students learn best in well-managed classrooms in which problem behaviors, such as interrupting or other disruptive or inappropriate behaivors, present rarely. RTI & Classroom Behaviors, a quick-reference guide by noted RTI expert Jim Wright, uses the framework of RTI to demonstrate how teachers can create a foundation for positive classroom behaviors and effectively respond to common behavior problems.

The six-page (tri-fold) laminated guide recommends a variety of specific tier 1 (whole class) strategies for creating an optimal learning environment, such as

  • Developing and clearly articulating positive class rules and goal behaviors
  • Designing lessons that are stimulating and delivering them at a brisk pace
  • Assignments that are challenging but not overwhelming
  • Implementing basic class routines
  • Proactively recognizing students engaging in positive behaviors
  • Employing proximity control by circulating the room
  • Using brief verbal prompts to remind students of expected behaviors
  • Providing specific and sincere feedback and praise
  • Giving clear directions and effective commands
  • Incorporating cooperative learning
The guide also offers a variety of tier 1 strategies for responding to minor behavior problems, including non-compliant or defiant behaviors, inattentive behaviors, and hyperactive behaviors. Targeted (tier 2 and 3) interventions, such as a rewards system and behavior contracts, are also provided for addressing more serious or persistent behavior problems with individual students or small groups.
