Grade level: 3-5. Every child wants to fit in and be accepted. Being different in any way is often cause for painful teasing. This program helps develop children's sensitivity to others by showing them how it feels to be different. Four true-to-life scenarios reveal how a personal attribute or opinion can make youngsters the target of teasing, putdowns and ridicule. Questions that prompt discussion about feelings and encourage the celebration of differences follow each scenario. While having a snack after a softball game, John reveals he has diabetes and has to watch what he eats. Sam teases him - Jody defends John, saying that it's important to respect differences. Lucash can't speak English and is the subject of ridicule until two of his classmates take the time to help him and make him feel welcome. While putting a jigsaw puzzle together, Matt insists that Kim's way is wrong - they learn that no one approach is better or worse then another, just different. Jason makes fun of Rob, who's signed up to do a tap dance at the Spring Concert, by saying "Boys don't dance." But Rob won't give in. He decides not to let anyone stop him from being himself.
This program helps students learn to respect their differences and enjoy their diversity, making their classroom community a more positive place.
