Examining Student Work takes you behind the scenes of innovative schools to see how educators are using actual student work as data information to build a rich picture of student learning, to improve classroom instruction, to increase the rigor of teaching assignments--ensuring that assignments align with standards--and to provide teachers with opportunities for ongoing, job-embedded professional development.

Scenes from actual classrooms and teacher work sessions reveal how to look at student work through a collaborative process. Interviews with educators explain how critical review of student assignments benefits classrooms and schools.

Plus, three tapes in the series provide in-depth demonstrations of three proven approaches. And an accompanying Facilitator’s Guide helps you create a powerful workshop that gets teachers and other audiences started in the process.

Use tape 1 in the series, Improving Student Learning, to give audiences an overview of why and how analyzing student work can improve teaching and learning. Video scenes show how teams of teachers and other stakeholders work collectively to learn what their students know and are able to do and determine how to move forward with improved classroom instruction. And interviews with teachers and administrators explain how student work provides the data schools need to demonstrate student progress, identify where change is needed, and encourage teachers to reflect on their practice.

Then use tapes 2, 3, and 4 to give audiences an in-depth understanding of three proven approaches to examining student work through collaborative teams:

• The Tuning Protocol—A seven step collaborative process that helps teachers examine student work to fine-tune their instruction.
• Standards in Practice™ (SIP)—A process developed by the Education Trust to review the rigor of classroom assignments and help teachers to align classwork directly to established standards.
• Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning—A method that encourages teachers to focus on a particular student, over time, in order to learn and understand how students master a particular concept or skill.

Scenes and interviews from actual schools demonstrate the steps in each process and how to follow-up after student work is examined.
