Educators must be familiar with and act in accordance with numerous federal laws affecting education, including laws that mandate equality in education and prohibit discrimination by programs receiving federal funding (Equal Education Opportunities Act of 1974, TItle IX), laws guaranteeing equal rights to individual with disabilities, and laws mandating that children with disabilities have access to Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), including the provision of special education services (support services, modifications, accommodations) within the least restrictive environment (LRE), due process (through Individual Education Plans/IEPs), access to nonacademic and extracurricular activities equal to those provided to non-disabled students, and access to the general education curriculum (IDEA).
