Increasingly, students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) or questioning are coming out in school rather than trying to keep their sexual identity or orientation a secret. Although there is generally greater acceptance of LGBT individuals in American society today than ever before, schools are notoriously difficult social environments under the best of circumstances. Kids who are different are often targets of teasing and harassment; this is especially true for kids who come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, or those who are suspected of being  “in the closet.”

In Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students, author Peter DeWitt offers educators specific strategies for creating school environments that are safe, tolerant, and welcoming to all students, in particular those who identify as LGBT.

The book includes recommendations for

  • Implementing a student code of conduct and school board policies to safeguard students
  • Helping staff members recognize and respond to overt and covert instances of LGBT bullying and/or harassment
  • Implementing professional development, including guidelines of how and when staff should intervene
  • Including LGBT topics in the curriculum
  • Instituting/supporting Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) in middle and high school settings

This timely and sensitive guide features numerous cases and examples, model codes of conduct (including the NY Code), book study questions, and links to pertinent articles, websites, and blogs for further information.
