In Enhancing Instructional Problem Solving, authors John C. Begeny, Ann C. Schulte, and Kent Johnson put forth a schoolwide model of instructional support that helps educators make the most of the time, resources and personnel available to them: the Systems-Oriented Plan for Academic Achievement (SOPAA). SOPAA is a pragmatic plan that allows an educator or small group of educators to systematically implement a number of interventions. It is fully compatible with Response To Intervention (RTI). The comprehensive, yet time- and resource-efficient, and user friendly approach of SOPAA leads to the improvement of student outcomes in reading, math, and writing. The authors also provide materials and guidelines for documenting efforts to assist struggling learners, in compliance with reporting requirements from IDEIA, 2004, among others.

SOPAA integrates six key components that collectively improve how schools respond to common challenges:

  • Targeted Assistance Programs for Students (TAPS): To identify and assist struggling learners through systematic development of an intervention plan
  • Assessment for Instruction: Strategies for accomplishing assessment goals
  • Maximized Intervention Personnel and Resources: Helps identify, train and coordinate school personnel to assist classroom teachers during the TAPS process.
  • Targeted Professional Development:  Targeted professional development activities for all teachers involved in the TAPS process
  • Methods for Communicating and Generating Support: Steps and resources for successful communication among all individuals involved with SOPAA implementation
  • Adaptable and Incremental Implementation: Ways that schools with varying characteristics can successfully implement SOPAA in a way that fits with the school’s needs.

The book includes more than 20 reproducible worksheets and forms, presented in a large-size format with lay-flat binding for easy photocopying. The companion website features additional reproducibles and supplemental materials for use in conjunction with the book.
