A school’s culture is derived from a multiple elements, including processes, structures, patterns, and tools, as well as relationships, identity, connections and data.  Authors Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey and Ian Pumpian posit that the mission of a school should be to capture and integrate all of these elements. The pursuit and ultimate fulfillment of this mission creates a culture of achievement.

Yet it is not enough to say that stakeholders should agree to and support a mission; they must know how to do so. The authors of How to Create a Culture of Achievement in Your School and Classroom suggest school leaders need a specified set of purposeful language, actions, and routines designed to make students and other stakeholders feel welcome, comfortable, important, and understood, as well as a set of language and practices that build the culture of achievement.

The book recommends practices to help schools get into a continuous cycle of improvement. These practices are organized into five pillars, each with a corresponding explanatory chapter that includes specific practices and structures to ensure that the pillar becomes part of daily practice. The five pillars/chapters are

  1. Welcome
  2. Do no harm
  3. Choice words
  4. It's never too late to learn
  5. Best school in the universe

The book helps educators identify and develop organizational principles, service cycles, and action research tools that further the mission of the school and nurture a culture of achievement.
